Top 5 Earthquake Resistant Structures Around the World

Image
Earthquakes are one of the most destructive forces of nature. Structures and infrastructures suffer the most when an earthquake strike a seismically active region in the world. Seismic loadings must, therefore, be taken into account when designing structures especially those that are considered as skyscrapers. Let’s roam around the world together and discover the top 5 earthquake proof structures and learn how buildings can be designed to resist extreme seismic loadings. How do earthquakes happen? As an engineer, it’s important to initially understand what the problem is to make the solving part easy. So, what exactly is an earthquake and how do they happen? Everyone knows about the existence of tectonic plates and how they influence the movement of the Earth’s crust. Earthquakes happen when these tectonic plates collide with each other and produce large magnitudes of energy measured using the Richter scale. The movement of these tectonic plates can be attributed to one simp...

LIVING ROOT BRIDGES

Image
Living root bridges   are a form of  tree shaping  common in the southern part of the  Northeast Indian  state of  Meghalaya . They are handmade from the  aerial roots  of Rubber Trees (  Ficus elastica ) by the  Khasi  and  Jaintia  peoples of the mountainous terrain along the southern part of the  Shillong Plateau . The pliable tree roots are made to grow through betel tree trunks which have been placed across rivers and streams until the figs' roots attach themselves to the other side. Sticks, stones, and other objects are used to stabilize the growing bridge This process can take up to 15 years to complete. The useful lifespan of any given living root bridge is variable, but it is thought that, under ideal conditions, they can in principle last for many hundreds of years. As long as the tree they are formed from remains healthy, they naturally self-renew and self-strengt...

Dubai to have tower dangling in the air from space?

Image
An artist's impression of how the proposed asteroid-suspended Analemma Tower would look. (Photos courtesy: www.cloudsao.com) The building would be suspended from an asteroid orbiting 50,000kms from the earth A New York-based firm is proposing that Dubai is the site of a futuristic, asteroid-suspended skyscraper that orbits around the world. The speculative Analemma Tower - which is being proposed by the Clouds Architecture Office - is designed to be suspended downward on an asteroid orbiting 50,000km from earth. It would orbit in a figure-eight pattern across the northern and southern hemispheres in a 24-hour cycle each day. A design close-up of the asteroid from which the proposed skyscraper would be suspended using high-strength cables On its website, the firm notes that "Analemma inverts the traditional diagram of an earth-based foundation, instead of depending on a s...

Let's Go Green( Nanjing Vertical Forest)

Image
Asia’s first Vertical forest, called the Nanjing Vertical Forest, will be built in the South of China’ Jiangsu province. The vertical forest is expected to produce 60 kg of oxygen every day which will reduce the air pollution which plagues China. [Image Source:  Stefano Boeri Architetti ] Global Air Pollution Air pollution is currently a major global issue for countries all over the world. Countries are trying to find solutions in order to fix this problem. According to WHO data, outdoor air pollution has risen by 8 percent since 2011. “We have a public health emergency in many countries. Urban air pollution continues to rise at an alarming rate, wreaking havoc on human health,” said Dr. Maria Neira, Director of Public Health at the WHO in Geneva. People are moving out of the country and into cities which are causing megacity air pollution. This, in turn, is a danger to both the public and the environment. “It’s...

ANTI-STATIC EPOXY FLOORING

Image
Anti-static epoxy flooring is preferred over other flooring methods when it is required to provide a floor having joint-free finishes along with high chemical resistance and decorative properties. Anti-static epoxy flooring is mostly used in electronic and telecommunication industries, automotive industries, pharmaceutical factories, aerospace industries, operation theatres, computer rooms etc. In order to prepare a high performing coat, good substrate preparation is pivotal. The surface of the concrete over which the coat has to be laid must be hard, sound and free of dust and other barrier materials such as paint, lime, coatings, plaster, curing agents, laitance and other adhesive residues. Anti-Static Epoxy Flooring Method Preliminary preparation for Anti-Static Epoxy Flooring A suitable degreaser is firstly used to remove polish, wax, grease, oil and similar contaminating substances prior to mechanical preparation. Contaminated concrete surfaces are mechanically ...

Nano coating that helps the long life of concrete

Image
The Ultra Ever Day company of Australia had discovered an new nano coating technology that can be applied on any materials. So if we apply these kind of this in concrete it will helps in enhancing the corrosion resistance of concrete and thus helpful in overtaking the saline environment like the seashore construction etc,.

Epoxy Flooring The resin and hardener is mixed together where they chemically react to form a rigid plastic material that is strong, resistant to degradation and that bonds extremely well to its substrate. Epoxy floors are so strong that they can be used in even the most demanding of industrial environments.
